Chicago Crowned Best Large U.S. City for the Ninth Year in a Row
Chicago has once again taken the top spot in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards, marking the ninth consecutive year the city has earned the title. More than 750,000 voters weighed in, praising Chicago’s blend of vibrant culture, iconic architecture, standout food scene, and renowned hospitality.
Adding to the accolades, the U.K. edition of Condé Nast Traveller listed Chicago among the friendliest cities on the planet—making it the only American city to make this year’s global list.
What the publication said
In its write-up, Condé Nast highlighted Chicago’s enduring appeal, noting its celebrated skyline, esteemed museums, innovative culinary talent, and booming craft beer culture. The publication encouraged visitors to explore beyond the downtown hot spots—such as the Magnificent Mile, the upscale Gold Coast, and eclectic Old Town—pointing out that the city’s 77 neighborhoods offer everything from trendsetting restaurants to relaxed local pubs, all complemented by famously warm Midwestern hospitality.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson welcomed the recognition, crediting the city’s residents for its continued success. He emphasized that the “creativity, resilience, and welcoming nature” of Chicagoans are what give the city its unmistakable character. Gov. JB Pritzker echoed the sentiment, describing the honor as a reflection of Chicago’s “strength, resilience, and heart.”
